Review of the "Bridging Cultures" project 2012

02. November 2012
Having won the UNESCO Award for the “Bridging Cultures “ Project last year, the Hope Foundation strived to present a team of speakers Swastiti from Indonesia, Cecilia from Ghana and Tomás from Costa Rica to continue the English language workshop in German schools. Interesting topics such as Globalization, Malaria, Millennium Development Goals, Deforestation and Women Trafficking were among the topics discussed during the workshop in the schools.

Usually, the media presents a facade of the reality of the situation in developing countries and they rarely discuss the reality of the situation and the real life experiences of the locals. This gave Swastiti, Cecilia and Tomás the opportunity to present an authentic picture of the situation in their home countries and to give the students a vivid idea of the way of life of their people respectively.

The speakers drew particular attention to the problems of globalization with relation to their home countries and the progress that has been made so far.

Thereafter, the students were divided into groups of 3 representing the 3 countries and they worked on the respective topics in more depth. The main idea was to bridge the gap between the different cultures, creating a platform where the students got to react with the speakers to gain firsthand experience from people who had lived in the countries. The students who interacted in English came up with some innovative ideas about how to deal with the issues in the 3 countries such as Fair Trade campaigns for agricultural export in Costa Rica (bananas and pineapples) and media campaigns against the trafficking of women in Indonesia or even an event against Malaria dubbed Rockalaria.

Mr Cakmakoglu, a commissioner for integration in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district, visited the Herder-Gymnasium and summarized that, “Such workshops are necessary to impart valuable knowledge to the students and to also protect the environment better than our generation did”. This is exactly the Hope Foundation seeks to do with the Bridging Cultures project – to create awareness among the students.

The third “Bridging Cultures” project lasted two months and with the three speakers from three different continents, we visited ten Berlin secondary schools and interacted with over 500 students contributing to a cosmopolitan life in a global world and city. We patiently await the sequel of the project next year…
