While
working in Lomié during the past summer, Hope Foundation discovered one big
problem which is a main cause for many illnesses in that area. This is the lack
of portable and clean drinking water. Villagers have to walk for many
kilometers before they can gain access to clean and nice water. Working
together with our partner organization in place, ADELOM, with the support of
the Mayor of Lomié, we discovered that Lomié town itself got a number of
abandoned water points which are no longer functional. These are water points
which were either built during the colonial era or by some bigger organizations
which never took the pains to come back to check and control how functional the
water sources are.
Together with volunteers both local and international, Hope Foundation together with Adelom started work on one of these abandoned water points which need renovation. These are all natural water collection tanks where water is collected into concrete tanks and then cancelled through a pipe to reach the people. Here, the pipes were broken and rusted, the walls old and broken as well and the whole surrounding blocked dirty and muddy. Work here comprised of replacing the old pipes, cleaning the area and breaking of the old walls. We worked on this project for three days and intend to continue it during the dry season which is an ideal period to build concert wall outdoors due to the good sunshine. This water point will be able to serve up to 4000 people when it will be completed.
We call on supporters and well wishers to support this project so that by May next year 2012, we should be able to present a new water gift to the people of this neighborhood in Lomié.
