Upcoming Mouth Hygiene and Toothbrush Project

• Does every child in Cameroon have a toothbrush ?
• How important is it to brush our teeth and keep our mouths clean?
• How many times do we need to brush our teeth a day?
• Which are the best methods in keeping our teeth and mouths clean?
• Are sweet things good for our teeth?
  

These are questions which will guide the Hope Foundation Summer 2010 Mouth Hygiene and Toothbrush Project.
One of the main problems in Cameroon is that children oftentimes get to the age of 13 without ever having the opportunity to use a toothbrush. Following talks with a number of local dentists, this problem alone has contributed to a number of mouth and teeth illnesses where most of these children lose their teeth at a very young age due to lack of basic hygiene education and sanitation materials. The lack of professional dentists in many regions to regularly conduct check-ups and the poor insurance system in developing countries can be held accountable for poor mouth and teeth hygiene standards.

Together with a number of international volunteers, the Hope Foundation staff will have the opportunity to educate various groups of children on the importance of having a clean mouth and healthy teeth. Children will not only be given demonstrations on how to brush their teeth, but they will also learn how they can prevent themselves from various mouth diseases and teeth infections.

Each child will get a toothbrush, toothpaste, and a drinking cup, and they will receive instructions from a volunteer instructor on how an exemplary mouth and teeth cleaning procedure is carried out and the various movements that are necessary to make sure that the mouth and teeth are left sparkling clean.

We call on donors and sponsors to support our project with the various material needed which for the most part include toothbrushes and toothpaste.
