The first “Fair Champions” project has been a great success!

20. July 2015

During the project, the children took a glance at the labels in their clothes and learned more about the manufacturing countries and materials, especially cotton. Ms. Conrad from the Kurt Tucholsky Primary school compliments that “due to the informatory stations at the beginning, all students felt included and involved”.

As a key aspect of the project, the children got to know first hand the unfair living and working conditions which most of the workers of the textile production have to face every day by assuming a role of a worker in a role play. This part of the project was highly effective – the children understood right away that the amounts of work/effort and wages are unequally distributed among the participants of the supply chain. Because the groups then presented their character and his/her living environment and problems, the class got to know all participants of an exemplary supply chain.

Furthermore, the pupils learned about the „Fair Trade“ concept and the advantages of organic cultivation, and discussed whether certificates standing for fair working conditions, organic farming etcetera could be trusted. Moreover, suggestions for a more conscious textile consumption were collected.

The design of the t-shirts, all students' highlight of the project, was the last activity taking place. The students of all participating classes enjoyed this task very much and created versatile, meaningful t-shirts, sensitising the children's schoolfellows, friends and families for the topic as well.

At the summer fête with all the participating schools, the t-shirts were presented and the children got the possibility to design their own clothes or do up-cycling activities such as braiding handbags from old shirts. Also, a huge buffet and a quiz were organised, and the children received a personal certificate which officially honours them as “Fair Champions”.

In order to maintain a lasting effect of the project, the t-shirts as well as pictures and posters are now exhibited in the school buildings. What's more, two of the participating classes visited other classes wearing their t-shirts and telling their schoolfellows about the “Fair Champions“ project and its content. These cross-project activities were received very well: “There is a lot of interest and positive feedback concerning the exhibited t-shirts and the “Fair Champions” wall“ (Ms. Skutnik, Pettenkofer Primary School). The children also appreciated to pass on their newly acquired knowledge: One of the participating students answered the question “What did you especially like?“ with “That we were able to present the project to four other classes“.

The feedback questionnaires clearly showed that all teachers and a clear majority of the students really enjoyed the project – many children wrote down that it should have lasted longer than two days or asked whether there was another project coming soon. The two referees were also completely satisfied with the project's organisation and implementation, and especially with its impact. The positive feedback, the great teamwork with both the referees and teachers as well as the significant changes in the children's attitude are the reasons why we are more than happy with the first implementation of the “Fair Champions” project!
