11. November 2013

The last two days at school were remarkably good. Thanks to friendly representatives from countries of Taiwan, Zambia and Colombia- they were very open and creative, I had a lots of fun in the workshops and especially enjoyed final student presentations.” said a student from Melanchthon Gymnasium after the workshop.

Bridging Cultures, the intercultural project has successfully accomplished its fourth year project in the schools of Berlin. The project started in the first week of September- with the main purpose of raising awareness among the youths about the cultural differences and various socio-economic/political issues faced by countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Over the past two months, seven schools in Berlin (Georg- Herwegh- Gymnasium, Paulsen Gymnasium, Herder Oberschule, Max Planck Gymnasium, Jüdisches-Gymnasium, Melanchthon-Gymnasium and Otto-Nagel Gymnasium) participated in the workshop with many schools teachers describing it as “a constructive seminar where along with students, they also get to learn foreign cultures and are eagerly

waiting for next year Bridging Cultures project.”

In a two-day workshop held entirely in English, the speakers from Colombia, Taiwan and Zambia/Nigeria delivered insight into the culture and history of their country and their continent. Each speaker introduced at least one socio-political issue from their respective country of origin and students were asked to work in a group in order to find solutions.

This year the topics included “Sovereignty of Taiwan and Foreign Brides in Taiwan ", “Colombia disease- Drug Lords and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs ) in Colombia”, and “Health issues- Malaria in Zambia and social media as an innovative tool in combating diseases ".

The students demonstrated their ideas and newly acquired knowledge in the form of impressive role play, debates, and PowerPoint presentations.

In the past two months over 380 students participated in the workshop with many students describing it as a “very informative, interesting project and opportunity to learn about different culture across the world”.
